Mower manufacturers do wax and wane with their machines, sometimes because of a change of ownership. I was talking to a technician at the Masport importers the other day and he verified this. Masport have always been a very well made and very well performing brand but ten years ago they were taken over. Cost cutting reduced the quality, nearly ruined the firm, and it took three years to claw back to where they were.
Mountfield have waxed and waned as well. I remember many years ago using one of their machines that left a line of finely cut grass along one side of the deck while picking up the bulk of the cuttings well enough. If you didn't like the line it left you just had to get rid of it.
There are plenty of other examples of machines that are good at one thing but poor at another. It can be very difficult to find a mower that gives you all you want. I've been hiring different makes lately before placing my order, besides reading forums and asking dealers. Mind you they just tell you that what they've got in stock is the best!
