easy,have a drive around your local area,find national grid guys working,have a chat with them aand ask them if they are interested in a private job,if they dont want to do it they will know someone who is interested.
gas4you who told you meter inlet had to be an anaconda. Used to be a rule 20 year ago inlet could not be longer than 2feet with no soldered joints(after leads where the norm ) but thats gone long ago.
To summarise then, it looks like only NG should do work on the supply side of the meter but nowadays it isn't necessary to use anaconda between the valve and the meter, with copper being acceptable, and I wouldn't be the first to use non-NG people to do what is a relatively straightforward job. I'll try badgering NG a bit more but I'm definitely not paying £700 for such a simple job.
