Moving virgin/telewest cables

Ok

I opened the grey box and the smaller cable on the shotgun pair is not connected. Its cut off.

The other two are connected and go into a splitter in the grey box. the larger of the shotgun into the right and the unknown cable into the left.

Are you sure it's cut off? I see some cores of phone wire in the box can you see where they go?

Agreed, thought that looked a bit funny.

Thats cut off and stripped back outer sleeve.

Apologies guys I wasn' t being very observant

Yeah its cut back exposing the coloured wiring.

So which cable does what?

The two coax cables supply TV/internet. The phone cable supplies your phone line.

That little box they've installed is awful. Obviously not sealed, and if that's what they consider acceptable wire management, they can stay off my property.

To be honest the whole lot is a complete mess. Untidy and poor work.

I need to move it all to allow some building works to be carried out.

Are you sure your phone service is provided by Virgin?

If you do not want tv or broadband from Virgin, simply unscrew both top cables that go into the splitter and remove them completely from your property.

Yeah phone service is def Virgin. We also have Virgin broadband but not tv services as we use Sky

I think I will resite the phone socket and tv socket/isolator and go through the back of the grey box and mount it not the other side.

The box is knackered and needs replacing. I will take another pic of the shambkes of a cable they have installed on my path!

I'm gonna move it!

Only a guess but I suspect it amounts to a breach of contract if you touch their equipment or cables. Could be costly in the long run. Why not simply get them to do it?

When I moved into this house, there were 2 VM cables from the outside box that ran around the outside of the house to the back bedrooms.

I removed them and disposed of them, including the internal termination points. I hate wires on the outside of houses.

I left the termination point and phone line in the lounge, which is the other side of the wall to the external box.

A few months ago I signed up to VM TiVo and an engineer attended. Nothing was said of the "missing" equipment / cable.

A note: Virgin broadband runs on Co-ax cable. Virgin TV runs on Co-ax cable. These can be split anywhere on your property. Only virgin phone runs down the phone wire. They dont send broadband down the phone wire, because they can get far more down a co-ax than they can down a pair of tiny copper wires.

Coax is a single tiny copper wire. Twisted-pair will get you a hell of a lot more than coax, used properly. Please don't confuse abuse of the telephone network with twisted-pair cables being inferior to coax.

I beg to differ. Even the very most expensive cat7 cabling can't be used to distribute satellite signals, where properly screened coax can...
