Hi - Does anyone have any experience of installing a multi burner and the costs and equipment involved. Basically the fireback of my fireplace has burned out, so I removed to replace and thought a burner would look quite nice but have only a basic idea of whats involved, so any advice would be much appreciated. I have attached a couple of pics of the bare fireplace, the brick work is shot on both sides but doesn't appear to be to bad on the back. Thanks in advance,

Ian

We had a multi fuel stove installed last winter and it completely changed the room for the better. Now it's getting chillier the dog is starting to lie in front of it and wants to know why we aren't lighting it for him :)

Building regs apply and if you just search for 'multi fuel stove building regs' on google you will get no end of hits.

We shopped around and got quotes from £1500 - £2500 for installation and supply of a 5kw stove which retailed for £400 on Ebay. We were advised not to get the chimney lined with a stainless steel pipe, if we had then the quotes were an additional £1k.

All these quotes gave a very healthy profit to the installers but everybody wanted a stove fitting this time last year and that was the market price.

We wouldn't recommend the firm who did it as the salesman (owner) sold us something that the lads who did the job said could not be done in the day that was alloted to them. What I'd do differently is get a general builder who I know and trust to do the work and get building control to come in and sign off. I'd also speak to a sweep to find out what he would like to see when he comes round to and cleans the flue out.

Well worth getting though.

Thanks for that.....2.5K seems v expensive but guess you get what you pay for. I would be looking to do the work myself so was just wondering on the specs i should be looking at for the stove and surround etc....

Never believed that to be true. The difference between the £1.5k and £2.5k as far as I could tell was a soot door and a pencil drawing of what it would look like (without having seen the room). The quotes were more to do with supply/demand than what you paid for.

Now I've seen one done I'd definitely say you should be able to do it yourself. I'd still get a good builder in myself though, sort of thing you need a young lad to be on hand for, lots of heavy iron to be shifted and somebody has to go up onto the roof :)

There fairly easy to do if theres two of you on hand the trickiest bit was getting the flue down the chimney. there is also a space issue around the stove. I got all I needed from http://www.stovesonline.co.uk/ and did it in a day. BC came out to inspect and because I'd followed the guide lines of my particular stove all they were concerned with was adequate ventilation in the room.

Just had a Stovax Riva 55 installed; £1150 + £170 for black granite hearth ordered direct of the internet; I installed the hearth & got a local independent HETAS fitter to instal the liner, stove & associated fittings, specd & ordered by him & paid for direct from the supplier by me. His bill on the day was £445 but subsequently reduced to £400 because he only used 4 bags of Vermiculite instead of 8.

I did contemplate DIY but LABC will charge you £110 ish to inspect & you’ve got to get up on the roof with an 8m long SS snake on your back! It’s also a very full day’s work even for someone who knows what they are doing; shop around, IMO the HETAS bloke & his certificate was well worth the £290 extra I paid over the DIY option!

Thanks for that.....for the sake of £290 well worth it. Its the getting on the roof part what worries me

& with 8m of flue liner on your back; I will tackle anything but it’s exactly what put me off  .

You don’t have to pay the over inflated prices the specialist stove stores will quote you, you just need to shop around a bit. Whatever stove you fancy you will find someone selling it on-line & my Stovax Riva was £300 cheaper incl. delivery than the “stove stores” who would only quote the manufacturers RRP; & they wanted an extra £100 for the front frame which was thrown in on mine. Don’t believe the bull some may feed you about invalidating the manufacturers warranty either, it’s fine as long as it’s installed in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. I was concerned it might be a “closed shop” when it came to getting a HETAS fitter but a Google to their web site threw up around 6 in my area & only 2 of those were operating on a shop “tie in”; the others were quiet happy to quote for installing my stove & the guy that did mine was more than happy for me to do the building work on the opening, vent & lay the Granite hearth & surround once he was satisfied it all complied with BR’s. Good luck ;)

There is a fair chance that your flue will need lining. It can be done with perlite concrete, which is good for at least 30 years, but installation is more disruptive.

Had a quote today just to fit the liner to building regs, included plates, capping, liner and installation. £1500 +vat......think i'll be sticking with my fireplace!

As I said, shop around, you should be able to do much better than that. My installation was less than £900 & that included fitting the stove; take away the cost of the materials & it's only a days work!
