I've had a problem. My electirc hob went bang. It tripped the trip switch for the oven and the hob. I've flipped the trip but now only the oven works and none of the four plates on the seperate hob work. I'm assuming the hob must be broken, is this likely to be the case? If so I guess I need a new one. Will I need a pro to fit it, because my step dad is an engineer who builds small subs and is pretty handy, so if it's just a case of replacing old for new he should be able to do it no?

for all four plates to stop working it may be an easy thing to fix, maybe a spade lug(live feed) has come adrift and touched down to the metalwork causing the short which has now cleared?

Have your step dad have a look before you decide to throw it away.

If you do need to buy a new one, make sure it will fit in the existing hole or you will be into cutting out worktop.

Also make sure the new one does not pull more watts than the old one.

seperate hob you say?

you have only one MCB for the oven and hob or do you mean an RCD?

as said is't likely to be a wire come adrift either feeding the hob or inside the hob itself..

hi guys. thanks for your advice. it is a seprate hob on the same trip switch as the oven. i think it's probably bust, as it is a bit old now and was only a cheap one. I've just gone and bought a new ceramic hob and i'm going to get my stepdad to fit it at the weekend. it should be a case of just removing the old one and reconnecting the new one yeah?

the hole moght need a bit of adjustment.. it depends on the clearances etc that they allowed when fitting the old one and if the new one requires the same size hole..
