I know that the smart meter thread has been locked and I have no wish for this thread to continue in the same vein as that one did. However, for those members who do not know, there are smart meter which can be bought which are independent of the power companies. I have the Owl and once I set the tariffs, I can see at a glance not only my total electricity usage, but also what is being used at any particular time. This is very useful if you've left the oven or lights on elsewhere in the house. And far from being a benefit to my supplier, it tells me instantly that something should be switched off.
