My Little Owl

Shutpa

I know that the smart meter thread has been locked and I have no wish for this thread to continue in the same vein as that one did. However, for those members who do not know, there are smart meter which can be bought which are independent of the power companies. I have the Owl and once I set the tariffs, I can see at a glance not only my total electricity usage, but also what is being used at any particular time. This is very useful if you've left the oven or lights on elsewhere in the house. And far from being a benefit to my supplier, it tells me instantly that something should be switched off.

It's a sensor not a meter

http://www.gadgetspeak.com/gadget/article.rhtm/753/472409/the_owl_electricity_meter.html

Dubbed 'The OWL' this device comes in two parts - a sensor unit and a large display unit. It allows you to wirelessly monitor your households electrical energy consumption. The argument being that if you can see how much energy you're using you're more inclined to do something about it.

I don't see this saving the planet, for reasons I stated in the thread that was trolled and subsequently locked, but thanks for the information I'm sure most people could benefit from one of these as well as a deadlock/nightlatch on the front door to stop british gas unlawfully breaking into their home to fit an unwanted smart meter.

Looks useful. However, I see that the price on Amazon has gone up to £45. Until it comes down, I'll just continue to keep an eye on the oven and hob after the wife has finished in there. (I have to do it surreptitiously, though, or she shouts at me and tells me I'm being paranoid.)

yes, I have a couple of those.

I got them cheap on ebay from people who had lost interest.

Yes, they are useful for seeing if anything has been left on, and for people who have solar panels, they can be interpreted to see if it's a good time to run the washer, without needing to look out of the window.

One of the models can be plugged into your PC to track and record usage (or generation)

I don't understand why the other thread was locked???
Nor me. However, threads seem to get locked or deleted without explanation on a fairly regular basis. I've said before, I'm sure most of us would prefer to know why.

The mod said...
A SUBSTANTIAL NUMBER OF UNHELPFUL SQUABBLING POSTS HAVE BEEN REMOVED, AND THE THREAD IS NOW LOCKED.
