I am curious as to why Black people were called Spades in the first place as I for one cannot fathom why it would be the case. Some of the more insulting and unmentionable names are obvious in their origins, but the term Spade has be confused as to it's origin.

I don't want to start a debate, but if someone knows then please post, and perhaps all us will understand a little better.

One that was suggested to me was spade sounds vaguely like slave, or slaves would use spades to dig . . . slaves traditionally being black people. possible i suppose.
