Because our present back door is old, rusting and worst of all leaking, I've decided to replace it. Would I be better using one of the national double glazing firms or a joiner?

the national firms have the extra expense of TV advertising, Chairman's Rolls Royce, sales force all of which you have to pay for.

There's absolutely no reason why the national companies are better. If anything you're better finding a reputable local supplier/installer.

p.s. see your other topic for my reply re interim solution for leak ;)

What does of door should i go for? Sny help would be appreciated.

It depends on a few variables. If you're looking for the most cost effective option with little/no maintenance required, you could opt for a cheap and cheerful UPVC door or a very basic no frills wooden door. However remember the old adage, you tend to get what you pay for. Of course, there are also better quality UPVC doors on offer, higher quality of materials, more secure etc. Composite doors are gaining in popularity, they tend to look a bit more like a real wooden door but offer low maintenance a bit like UPVC. They tend to be more robust ... and expensive than UPVC. Or of course you can go old school and get a traditional wooden door, accepting this will require maintenance every x years e.g. exterior sand and re-paint.

As I say it's difficult to advise on as it depends what look you prefer, your budget etc. Bit of a cop out but I'd say go for the best you can afford, ensuring it comprises quality components and robust multi-point locking mechanism.

This is just a random retailer I found just now doing a quick Google (I'm NOT recommending them!) however the pointers they give might help you mull things over. Refers to front doors however most of the principals hold true for back doors.

Hope this helps at least a bit! If you can give any more pointers it's easier to give more specific options.

Thanks for your reply. Followed your link but couldn’t read the info because of the discount offer ad and the largish chat facility so sent the following via the chat.

“Hi, I want to read the info on your site but can’t because of the discount offer ad and this chat facility. How can I get rid of them and read the information your site offers?” The reply was brilliant!

“03:23:36 pm

I don’t know. Never had that question before”.

I then phoned and the guy who answered accessed the site and was amazed that he couldn’t read the info either. How did you manage diy_fun?

Anyway thanks for your input. Wooden doors are out and having just paid £1500 for a new front door without knowing whether it was UPVC, composite or whatever, I will probably go for the composite after reading your post.

Tbh I just grabbed that site off the internet, no issues viewing it but I'm doing so on my PC, if viewing on a smartphone might not be as forgiving pop-up wise. If you Goggle something like best type of door to buy UK you'll see lots of sites with advice, tips etc.

Not being funny but how did you not know what sort of door you were buying? Did the seller/installer not discuss with you pre order?

Like I say, if wooden doors are a no no, your best bet is a decent quality composite or UPVC with good quality locking mechanism and 3 star rated cylinder (the bit you put the key into) as it's one of the most important parts of door security.

Hope this helps.

No discussion. Handed in a catalogue and we picked one we liked the look of. I did raise a topic at the time asking about the costs but got no replies so simply went ahead. Quote from post: "its a Hallmark catalogue but there are no prices shown. So it’s a Hallmark Carlton 1 Florin. Anyone know a rough cost of supplying and fitting?".
