New bathroom....

Hi all, just after a bit of a steer if anyone can help.

looking to have our bathroom replaced in the new year, it’ll be a full rip out, some pluming to move (for taps and drainage) plastering tiling and fit out.

it’s our only bathroom in the house so I need to be all over the planning of it to make sure we’re living with as little disruption as possible, more so for my wife.

I’ve been around a few showrooms and have a general idea of what I want in terms of bathroom furniture (not being brand specific) and I know what I’m looking for with tiling as well. However I’m wondering which way is beat to go....

I can either order everything through Victoria plum, do the rip out, organise trades for first fix pluming, plastering and tiling myself and then fit the bathroom furniture myself. Or I could go through a bathroom fitter so supply and look after everything. Does the latter usually work out more expensive? Also would they give me a few options in terms of bathroom furniture or likely steer me down one supplier with a limited range?

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

I had my bathroom done 3 companies quoted around 6-8k. In the end I found someone who wanted £1500 for his labour and I provide everything. Cost me just under 4k total. So the doing more yourself while it is a bit more stress could save quite a bit.

1 of the quotes broke down everything to the make and model. Most items I found for less than half the price shopping around.

I presume you’ve had issues with them then? All seems to be pretty mixed reviews....

where would someone else source everything from? Not sure if I’m missing something but there doesn’t seem to be a “go to” place for bathrooms like there are kitchens.

Either you have been very lucky or had limited experiance of their products. opps meant end of line or cheap imports.

Say what you will doesn’t change the absolute fabulous bathroom I have and the extremely good customer service to resolve the small few issues I had.

Ah, just the one experiance of them then - Fair enough however myself and many other people refuse to install anything to do with them after experiances.

If you're getting Trades to do 90% of the work, then I'd honestly let them do the lot, it's hardly worth trying to scrimp on the final details and fit the suite yourself. Tiling needs to be done down to the bath ideally, not behind it, and it's very easy to damage tiles and/or the suite if you're not careful. Just bear in mind if you provide the suite etc, and the fitter subsequently finds anything damaged, then the job can be delayed whilst you deal with sorting replacements.

A good bathroom fitter will ensure you are without a WC for the minimum amount of time, (vital if you only have the one!). I would ask for recommendations, and choose a fitter you feel you can work with, and discuss with them who provides and does what.
