How in heck have we allowed ourselves to become possible prey to this bunch ?

......At 10am on Sunday, Russia is threatening to unleash the most powerful weapon in its post-Soviet arsenal: unless Ukraine agrees to a fourfold increase in the price it pays for gas, Russia will simply turn off the tap.
Nor is it just Ukraine under threat, the EU imports about half of its gas from Russia and 80 per cent of that comes through Ukrainian pipelines.....
:(
Nah, that's ok, we are all rich here, we own houses and stuff, we can pay more and more for fuel ...

That's fine...the West will simply cut off all financial aid to Russia and impose sanctions on trade....they need us more...except for the gas..but that can be got elswhere..

We will?? Not too sure about that.
We have/had 11 days supply stockpiled .... France and Germany have 55 days ... Our pips may squeak first.

This is typical of what will happen as the scarce commodity of fuel runs out. This is only the beginning. China is going to use 40% more oil this year than last. Where is that oil coming from? Out of the supply that comes to the West.
In fact China is in the market to buy its own oil company. That's how they will secure their supply.

Get used to it. This is only the beginning.

If you wanna see capitalists in action, go look for Chinese kids on street corners not many, they are usually grafting, turning a shilling or more ... Pop to a Chinese supermarket of a Sunday morning, see how they revere the car ...Beemers, Mercs and stuff... Oh they are coming ok, largely having swapped the gun for the cash register.... :D :D

we only get 3% gas from russia so they can stick it :p

Is that true? Can there be another problem lurking?

So when President Putin met Ivan Plachkov, the Ukrainian Energy Minister, in Moscow yesterday, there was more at stake than relations between the neighbouring states. Analysts fear the dispute could provide a foretaste of how Russia will use its massive oil and gas reserves as a foreign policy tool in future disputes with the West.
"Energy co-operation has replaced military might as the mainstay of Russia's international credibility," Chris Weafer, chief strategist at Alfa Bank in Moscow, said. "It is using its importance as an energy partner to pursue its geopolitical and foreign policy agenda."

The dispute began when Russia, which supplies a third of Ukraine's gas, demanded that Kiev agree to pay $220-$230 (£128-£133) per 1,000 cubic metres, compared with the $50 it had previously paid instead of transit fees for gas heading to Western Europe.

Blimey is this 'short and curlies' then ?

And they`ve got scores to settle with Japan

And Japan aren't a nuclear power (which is why they sided with the US over Iraq.

First stop Taiwan. (formosa)

yep, thats something to worry about,

china gets powerfull, invades japan/japans islands, USA will step in, we will stupidly go with the usa, the EU are too scared to make any commitment so will just sit there arguing about what to do, the aussies will probrably side with us along with a handfull of other nations, meanwhile north korea will enter siding with china, south korea and the us military there will obviouly go with the US, the likes of russia, if they have any sence will stay out of it but you never know who they would side with....anyone else who might get involved.....i guess israel will side with the US because of the huge US support they get, middle east will likly side with china/north korea because they hate the usa and this would be a nice excuse for the militants

to summerise, it Could all go, Pete – nuclear - tong, AKA- TITS UP

"life's a gas" as they used to say! perhaps we could do what we did last time and lower the pressure to conserve it?

The UK is largely self-sufficient when it comes to Natural Gas, we import between 3% and 7% from the EU annually, so whilst a shortage may cause a very small shortage here, it is unlikely to be as devastating as it will be to Germany, Austria, Poland, Luxembourg and Switzerland.

In fact if we really wanted to pour salt into the wound, we could stop selling the 21% of our Gas that goes to the EU...Then we would have a surplus and they would effectively have none...

I never understood why we sell then Gas, and then but a proportion of it back? We do this with Oil..we export more Oil from the North Sea fields than we import from elswhere??

I know it brings in hard currency etc etc..but it simply makes no sense to me..

Nth Sea gas is now low grade high sulphur 'sour' oil suitable for burning in power stations. We then import 'sweet' fuel oil.
