You are correct Freedie, these are units that have been returned to Dell for whatever, but they are fulled checked out before they are sent out the second time. I know people that have bought these machines and they are perfect in every way, you would never know they had done a mystery tour around the country.

When someone is on a limited budget, this is a great way of getting the best machine you can afford with the best bach-up you can get for the best deal.

The only good thing about Dell is they are the cheapest on the market so they will suit your budget BAHCO, personaly though if you can afford it, avoid them. For starters they advertise their products with a TFT screen but in the specs its an analouge monitor :!: I live by the HP Pavillion brands (Im on my third) and would not buy any other. You wont get one for £400 though, but you get what you pay for in life.

It sounds as though you require a low spec machine for simple, mundane tasks. I would insist on a dual layer dvd/cd recorder as the dvd's are excellent for backing up all your mp3's & data files. Good luck with whatever you decide

It's personal choice Graeme, but about Dell being the cheapest, rubbish. They may make bargain basement products for the bottom end of the market, but it is also possible to spend more on a DELL than any of that useless crap HP manufacture.

When I was working, our dept swapped from HP to Dell... needing some pretty heavy crunching ... Less down time more for the buck too !

My Dells have been great, my second Dell a p111 T600r xps and a recent family pass down of a similar aged 550 xps (revived with a £30 WD caviar), extra mem in both, are running fine, the disk drive failure was the only failure on the two yr 2000 machines ... we are about to give away my original Dell p150 pentium, which came with Win95 and Office 95 (must be mid-ish 90's model) running with an extra hdd and memory - fine ... I must say these machines were all near top of range when bought new .. very pleased, never needed to speak to Dell about anything .. V.Happy.

However, two or three machines do not make an overall winner -- But then neither do two or three bad experiences make a bad 'un.
Tis difficult to be objective when having a rant, or a glow --- I should know ;) ;)

Who said the modern consumer doesn't have brand loyalty?

To be fair to HP, I use an "HP Compaq" desktop machine at work, and I have found it to be good. More than powerful enough for what I do with it (2GHz-ish P4) very quiet, and never had any reliability problems with it despite our IT maintenance contractors ;)

THe one advantage that HP (Compaq) have over Dell is that they don't change the components every 5 seconds. This means that we can deploy our images for longer periods of time, we trialled Dell, but it was a nightmare, 'cos they seemed to change chipsets about as often as the wind changes direction. Not that this is relevant in this case

For what it is worth, I have had 3 Dell's and all of them have proved very reliable.

My company have over 200 Dell pc's for the last 15 years and they all run on Window 2000 (Window 2000 apparently very reliable and even the new pc is upgarded to Window 2000!) & only 1 fault with one of them which was mine  that caught fire :!: but to be fair is was the dusts build-up causing it to overheat I think. Dell replaced it and it was old :!: hmmm, maybe they don't want to lose our custom :D
