New house BUT next door has Subsidence

Well I would just like to thank everyone who has replied to this thread. We went to view the property this afternoon (inside etc) for the first time and we were even more attracted to it, the view is 40 ft above a massive expanse of flat green field and is quite breath taking. However after reading all your responses along with everything else friends and family have told us we've decided to look else where. Which is very annoying/depressing :( The search continues.....

I have since spoken to the house builder (big company) structural engineer who worked on the faulty foundation next door. He said that all the houses on that row are built on Pile foundations (being on a hill side which has had infill).

Infill on a hillside is basically un-stable ground. Even if the piles go through the infill to the original "solid" hillside there is still the problem of in fill material sliding and sideways pressure on the pile could snap the pile.

Don't consider it as a safe stable investment.

I know the feeling. We spent three years looking for a plot of land and turned many down on "minor technical problems". Eventually we found the most wonderful site and have been here 25 years.
