hi all, what a cracking site this is.i've been havin a scout through and its a mine of information.i live near sheffield and i'm at college doing city+guilds plumbing, just finished level 1 and hopefully enrolling for 2 in sept.i've been looking for work to gain some experience..ringing firms in papers+yellow pages etc but not been having much luck.i keep practicing when i have the time.its something i've always wanted to do but have not been able because of shift work until the oppurtunity came up to study on saturdays so i jumped at thechance.does anybody have any ideas what i should do(probably sounds like a daft question)or should i just keep phonin around?how did any of you get on the bandwaggon? thanks sr72

just to put les record straight corgi man i'm half way through level 2.had a letter from college the other day.it turns out that we've already done half of the course content for level 2.musn't grumble at that one.just keep marchin forwards is what my aunt bessie(champion yorkshire pudding maker used to say). :p  .bit bored with phonin.gonna do door to door with my boiler suit on and deerstalker.they(plumbers)will never look back :p

manners maketh a man;also everyday is a winding motorway.

I'd advise you do all the plumbing related learning youcan by DOING the job - for friends etc. Take a wc cistern apart and put it back together then find out why you made it leak -etc etc. If you can go to a plumber and say you've done X bathrooms, Y washing machine taps, Z tap washers, he'll be a lot more impressed than with half a course.

Your first washbasins will leak. Look at the waste fittings and work out why!

i totally agree with you chrisr.i'm gonna stick to odd jobs for friends and family first.gotta a chance to prove my worth shortly cause the mother in law(sweetheart :) )says she wouldn't mind an outside tap. here goes nothing :D .can i just ask one thing.when drilling through the wall do you use a19 or 20mm drill maybe?then run a bit of plastic overfloww then the cu pipe.just wondering before i start bringing the house down when i let the drill have it :) ta muchly

Yes up to 25mm drill and overflow to sleeve the pipe. Use the fitting which comes on a piece of pipe, which has a 1/2" female thread and a round flange with screw holes in. Use a pilot hole and if using sds hammer remember it'll knock a cone of brick out when it goes out through the other side. So either turn the hammer off for the last 20mm (tricky to measure) or if the inside isn't visible, drill from the outside.

Use an isolator so it can be turned off in freezing weather, but not one of the cheap little ones, which will have a restrictive little hole. Use either a full flow ball valve or a stop cock.

thanks for the info chris.gonna let battle commence at weekend.thanks
