Thinking of getting boy a replacement for his very battered iPhone 8.

Yes, none of us can own a smartphone with dropping and breaking it!

I am an Android nut, but know very little about Apple gear. Looked at iPhone X series. Bit confused as to what the best option would be. Or even if it would be best to get an iPhone 8 again.

If you had around 250 for a second hand iPhone, which would you get?

Both mine have iPhone XR, bought refurbished off eBay about 3 years ago for around £300. Both have decent cases and have been completely reliable, we've had one cracked screen which was replaced for £55. Batteries are a bit weak now but they're happy to supplement with power packs.
I'm an android user myself, but kids want what they want with their Christmas money - and for two quid a week....
There's a few reputable companies on eBay and they regularly have 15/20% discount codes, genuine warranties, and accurate grading systems.

Yes..... I got one from Music magpie (I think) been a good phone.

You could get a 10 for that budget. Be careful of the ones that say "No Face ID"
