I am replacing a broken railing on a staircase and have decided to take the opportunity to change things.

Standing at the bottom: The left side wall runs the lengh of the stairs, while the right side is open until about the fifth stair. The existing railing is in two separate pieces. The upper piece is simply attached to the right side wall on brackets. The bottom section starts at a newel post and has about four ballusters before running dead into the wall at the fifth step.

Here's my issue: (This is very hard to describe)
The newel post and the ballusters are mounted on a six inch wide flat board that runs along with the side stringer of the stairs. I dislike the look of this board and would like to do something else.
If I attach my ballusters directly to the stair stringer, what happens when I get to the wall at the fifth stair? The handrail will no longer be centered to end at the wall. Instead it will be half on and half off. Is there a better solution? Thanks.
