Hello. I need to run a supply from the farm main consumer unit via swa cable 39m length on the surface to a static caravan. I plan to feed via a 63 amp rcd. At the static end, Inplan to install 16mm earthing cable into earth rod. Can someone advise if this is safe and workable. Also, should I be earthing the cable armour? Many thanks.

Caravan electrics is definitely not a DIY job.

Will be getting a sparky to do it but was just interested to find out what to expect. Any ideas? Thanks

It can be safe if done correctly…..but it’s notifable and a caravan is I imagine is a metal structure and a extraneous conductive part

Do you know what the Earth type is at the supply end?

You have to be very careful how you deal with the Earth arrangement as you aren’t exporting the Earth but you still need the steel armour earthed.

I’m not too sure how the earthing should be done but my guess is that the steel armour gets connected to the supply end but not the other end…..the pros here might say that’s bolox, so don’t take my word for it

Have a watch

Interesting video, makes me wonder how many caravan sites have got it wrong….especially those on farms.

My experience of farm electrics is that farmers are mavericks

I’ve rented various farm buildings over the years, I’ve seen some shocking stuff and big 3 phase supplies. In fact I rent a unit at the moment and the barn where the electric boards is in a hell of a state…..and it’s covered in pigeon poo.

Sounds nice, hope it's cheap lol.

Lots of farm sites are inspected by the Caravan Club & the Caravan and Camping Club, I would imagine an EICR will be required , I only stay on approved sites

Farmers and publicans electrics , in general are a disaster
Indeed, I used to test a local breweries pubs, lots of two core extension leads, a ships brass lantern made into a table lamp, no CPC, condemned and letter sent in, went in the pub a few years late and it was still in service

Edit, and bad payers to boot

My earthing system is Tn-s. Had the house eicr done recently which confirms that. So swa cable to static with earth rod connected to the static consumer unit?

Please do watch the video, get it wrong and under fault conditions you could end up with a 240v caravan.

Your thread title kind of indicates you are Diying so unfortunately I’m not sure you will get much advice from the professionals on here

If you are doing surface SWA it needs clipping to a permanent wall, like a brick wall
