Hi all,

Just after a bit of advice about a hive or a nest install.

I’ve currently got a Baxi solo 15 he boiler for CH and HW. I’ve got a Drayton LP241 controller near to the boiler and then a Corgi dial thermostat in the hallway.
I’d like to update the controls to go with a hive or a nest but I’m just wondering how easy a self install is? I’ve had a look at various guides and it looks pretty straightforward (but I know things are never easy ).
I just wanted to clarify a couple of points. The wireless controller would replace the LP241 and would the thermostat just replace the wired thermostat in the hallway? Is it just a case of using the cables that are there?

I’ve attached a few photos to show you my existing set up.

thank you in advance,

Rich

No, the Nest Heat Link needs to be wired in in your airing cupboard (or wherever your zone valves & wiring centre are) and the Nest thermostat can then be wired in to where your current stat is, but you'll need to do a few wiring alterations in the wiring centre. Easy enough when you know how ;)

Thank you for the reply.

that’s the only electrics inside the airing cupboard. Is it the white box?

I’ve just looked at the Hive instructions and it looks like I can replace the LP241 with the Hive receiver as more or less a direct replacement (just wiring up correctly) the wiring even looks like it corresponds to the Drayton set up.
Then in the white box (with the yellow sticker on) I just need to trace back the wall thermostat controls yellow and red wire and disconnect the wall thermostat and either bridge to make it always on or just move the wire so it links directly to the central heating wire.
Obviously making sure that all the electrics are off.
Does that sound right?

Yes it does. Not sure what you mean about moving the wire to the heating wire?

Hi,
Thank you for clarifying.

I mean something like this in the diagram (sorry best I could find) just move the wire from the programmer (hive receiver) across rather than bridge.

It looks straightforward...is this all that is required?? (I’ve found from experience whether it’s working in my car or electrics, plumbing or whatever...nothing is ever straightforward )

I’ve just taken off the cover (with the electrics isolated) and had a look at the wiring. Going to have to have a good look at which wire goes where lol. Knew it wouldn’t be straightforward haha

Is there a better solution for labelling up these wires or a choc block that will separate them out so it is easier for future reference?

Hi all,

I think I’ve identified all the wires in the heating wiring housing.
Please could someone advise me if this looks correct? I know you can’t be definite without a multimeter (which I have) but I wanted to get a rough idea.

I’ve still not decided on a Hive, Tado or a Nest!

thanks in advance

Boxes full of random connectors are pretty scary until you get your head around all the connections.

I've had one of these fairly inexpensive wiring centres for several years now and it makes life so much easier when making any modifications to the system.
There are standardised wiring diagrams for them all over the web so it's pretty straightforward to connect up.

Thanks for this. I think I’ll have a go at this in a few weeks. Might as well get it nice and organised.

Do you think my wiring diagram looks correct?

I can easily identify the cylinder stat, motorised valve and CH pump wires because I can see where they go and come from so I’m confident they are correct.

Might be my dodgy eyes but I’m not seeing the HW OFF connection from the cylinder stat (stat terminal #2 on the Y plan diagram) which should join up with the same from the controller plus the valve Grey.

There should definitely be 3 wires coming from the cylinder stat.

I think you are right it’s missing off my diagram. I’ll have to go back and double check but after reviewing my photos it looks like there is a black wire coming from the cylinder stat into that same connection.

Well spotted. Have I identified all the wiring correctly do you think ?
