Oddly enough, it's a quirk of Darwinism that allows religion to flourish. Without it - it would have died out centuries ago.

Hopefully in a few hundred years once the rest of the world has caught up to us in the west in terms of education & living standards religion will be banished to history

You know this will never happen though.

I think it will eventually. It's almost died out in this country over the past 100 years. How many young people are now religious and attend church regularly? Hardly any. It's no coincidence that it coincides with the country becoming more prosperous and people becoming educated.

Really?
What planet are you living on? The uk is bust. We survive only because the government borrows huge sums of money from the money men.

Did you actually note what context that was written in? I said religion has died out because over the past 100 years we've become more prosperous. Are you seriously telling me that we haven't got more prosperous than we were in 1900? If so your the one who's living on a different planet. In 1900 vast swathes of the country lived in poverty, struggling to feed themselves and we had dire housing with outside toilets. Nowadays even those in poverty still have half decent houses, flat screen tv's & mobile phones.

Back then people lived within their means. Greed has taken over now.
Without debt you are always more prosperous imo.

It's unsustainable. When we stop borrowing - we go back to those times. And we can't borrow forever can we?

Why are people so greedy now?
My Mum walked a mile to school everyday barefoot because they couldn't afford footware. She went to sunday school the same way.
Nowadays every child has the latest trainers, x box, mobile, i pad etc etc. And walk to school? Are you joking!
My Dad ploughed with horses because he couldn't afford a headless horse and trampled flax up to his knees in a quagmire.
It must be because of the huge rise in atheism. Well we can't blame it on religion can we ?? cos it has died out.
R.I.P Religion. All hail the might of atheism and the new world order of debt, debt and more debt. Hallelulah.

We've always had debt and always will. It's not a new thing that has suddenly happened in the past few decades. It's just that we've got a massive budget deficit that is pushing up the total debt. We'll never end up with zero debt.

That's not what I am saying. What I am saying is that we have to learn to live within our means - or we need a bailout. Did you think we could borrow forever? What credit card do you have?

A gold amex :D

I don't disagree with you, i was just stating that governments always have and always will have a debt and borrow money. The problem is we're borrowing too much at the moment.

The problem is that we've substantially reduced our ability to manufacture things from raw materials which we can then sell at a profit. In effect the UK has truly become a nation of shopkeepers and middlemen; which is fine providing the globe has people who want to trade via our services and that there are people than can afford to buy these goods.

The state of Alberta in Canada has stopped all borrowing and have no debt. But thats probably due to the huge revenue its now receiving from the tar sands.

If we had that in the UK it would mean bulldozing an area the size of Wales. Would it pay off our debt? Probably not.
