I suspect the DM article is an intentional distortion of the truth.Dionne Barrett may well disagree with you.
Machete killer to be released after SIX MONTHS due to overcrowding
Gordon Gault (pictured), 14, died in hospital six days after he was attacked with a blade during an ongoing feud in Elswick, Newcastle, in November 2022.www.dailymail.co.uk
Maty was sentenced to 2 years and 8 months, i.e. 32 months.
He would be due for release under the usual circumstances in 16 months, i.e. 50% of his sentences.
Due to prison overcrowding, which released some prisoners early, they are released after 40% of their sentence., i.e after about 13 months.
However this does not apply to the most serious and violent offenders.
To get back to the calculation, it is claimed that Maty will be released after 6 months of his sentence.
Someone can't count. 6 months does not equal 40% of 32, i.e 13 months.
And evidently he was not considered to be a serious or violent offender, otherwise he would not be eligible for early release.
I suspect the answer lies somewhere in the date of the attack, i.e. November 2022, (we don't know when he was arrested), the date or his sentencing, March 2024, he will be released in September 2024.
I suspect he was held, on remand, for something approaching 18 months prior to his trial.
So the DM is a misleading article.
