When I took (& passed) my HGV 1 test back in the 'eighties running a red, for any reason whatsoever including 'I was right at the line' was an immediate failure. Official doctrine was 'you should approach the lights at a speed that enables you to stop should they turn red'

Agree.. It's a difficult one. I drive with much anticipation of what could happen and what another driver might do or not be able to do -- took a long time to learn to drive like that, but it's routine now. However, sometimes being the lead car means you have to consider what you do beyond following the textbook rules.
