This is indeed the reason.
Supermarket have far too much power in this country.
Trouble is we all like cheap food too much to care
It's one of the reasons...
Even the government admits the UK has a 'unique' system of food supply!
Namely that the powerful supermarkets lay down long term inflexible contracts, whereas elsewhere contracts tend to be flexible and there is more 'spot market' trading.
Of course the culling of millions of birds doesn't help, but the government is going to further squeeze egg supplies with a bit of opportunism...
Namely require people who keep chickens in their own gardens to register them, and a 'small' fee applied
We used to keep chickens, but even before the Ukraine war chicken feed became not 'chicken feed' anymore.
Thus whilst nice to have a supply literally in your own back yard, it no longer makes economic sense.
Hence we're all going to have to get used to more expensive food across the board.
As well as inferior food...
