No gas coming through

I have a flat that has been rented off and is currently vacant. The flat uses gas for the Compact 100p Gloworm Combi Boiler and a hob for cooking.

There have been no problems over several years.

The gas boiler was working OK whilst we were tidying up the place over a few days ie it was giving hot water with no problem, but the following day there was no hot water coming from the boiler and we assumed that the boiler had turned off. However, we also checked the gas hob and there was no gas coming through!

Before I bring a specialist plumber in I just want to know whether it is possible that the boiler can turn off and interrupt the gas supply to the hob. Has anyone had the experience of no gas coming through to the hob although the gas mains is turned on.

Note: I am not intending to try to undertake any fixes myself but I want to be briefed as much as possible before I call a corgi plumber in.

Are you sure you have not turned off the supply at the meter by accident or kids have done it outside?

Sometimes a second valve inside too!

Its very rare for a fault to suddenly occur like that.

You can call National grid who come out free to check the supply.

Thanks for your responses.

I have checked that the mains is switched on. But I suppose there could be another valve somewhere of which I am not aware. I will have a hunt around.

I called Natpower but they say that I need to get confirmation from a Corgi registered plumber that there is no problem on my side of the meter.

I did not want to call somebody in for something stupid (which I suspect it is).

I suggested that you called National Grid so I dont know why you called National Power !

I often get called out to something stupid! But then I get paid for my visit !

A few months ago it was a suitcase in the storage cupboard which had turned off the valve. But I had told him on the phone to check the valve at the meter was turned on.

A year ago I had a solicitor digging up the front garden to expose the gas pipe. At £330 an hour that was a very expensive job for him!

I then discovered there was a nicely labeled valve in the cupboard under the sink although the wife was adament there was none! She had filled the whole cupboard to the top with used plastic bags and I could hardly have told her on my first visit that she was telling lies and taken them all out only to make a fool of myself if there really was no valve there!

Had one last week. A customer I had fitted and Ecotec about 18 months previous.

Called to say boiler had packed up. Asked what fault code was showing.

F28 he said. I asked him to check that all his other gas appliances were working. He said yes they all were.

Went out 2 days later only to find NG had accidentally forgot to re-connect the gas from the street after replacing the main gas main in the street.

You knew there was a gas valve there all the time, didn't you?

Admit it, you just acted daft for a few hours while the poor solicitor was digging up his own front garden.

Not at all!

I treat my customers with the respect they deserve! ( Thats carefully worded. )

I could hardly tell her that I did not believe her and insist on clearing out her totally cluttered up kitchen to see for myself if there was a valve. That would have been very unprofessional.

The garden needed digging up anyway because the gas pipe had not been protected and was just buried in the earth. As far as I could tell it could have been holed and filled up with water to block the gas.
