Hi

We recently moved into a semi detached house that's 100 years old. We are woken up every morning at 5am by the kids next door screaming and banging.

This was bad enough but we can also hear their dad just reading them a bed time story. On further investigation it seems we have got a fireplace in our bedroom that's just been covered with plaster board and when I knock on this it seems that the chimney is hollow which is causing a lot if the problem.

If I get someone in to brick the chimney breast up properly will this reduce the noise by a lot? Also how much am I looking at spending for something like this? We have two chimneys (one in both bedrooms).

We are considering moving as we can't get any sleep so any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

Stuff each chimney with a child from next door, that'll save their dad reading the stories, so that's two problems solved.

sorry - I know that doesn't help you.

sounds like you have very thin walls (or loud neighbours). i dont think just bricking up the fire place will do much to limit the noise. What about battening your walls that face onto your neighbour and filling with noise reducing insulation and then plasterboarding it all up?

Db plaster board is apparently good for stopping noise to about 40Db, but that's about half (50Db) of the average conversation.
But there is already a party brick wall I assume, plus you can batten and insulate with foam. I'd say to insulate with cavity roll between your floor joists, that will help stop vibrations coming along where your joists mets your neighbours joist. That's the cheap option.
The other more expensive option is have kids, you'll sun sleeping patterns or be soo tired and broke you wont care and sleep through a hurricane!
