Hi I’m having a 4mx3m (permitted development) north facing extension built next month, but I’m really unsure on the shape of roof to have to allow the morning and evening sun to come in?
My builder has suggested a pitched roof with a velux in but that means the velux is facing north? I thought a pitched roof with a velux on either side would be better? One would be facing east and the other west.
I really don’t want to make a mistake and make the wrong choice!
Has anybody had a north facing extension done so I can learn from your experience? thank you

Is there an option to have windows/doors facing east/west?

The single North sloping rood will give you the ability to have a vaulted ceiling, will probably cost less and simplify the drainage. The other option is to consider a roof lantern.

Thank you. The bifold doors are planned on the east side and opposite (west side) is the solid wall (which is on the boundary to my neighbour) North facing will be a window placed in the centre. Hope it makes sense?! thank you

So the problem with having an east west roof pitch is that you will have guttering on your neighbours boundary or a need for a plinth and channeling to keep the rain water on your land.

I’d either go with a velux as per the builder or lantern roof light.

The kitchen in my holiday home is a similar setup and I didn’t bother with a roof velux. But it’s a coastal property so probably gets more light from the north
