So when the Irish Government publishes quarterly economic figures which include export/import values for <somewhere> & NI and <somewhere> & GB, where would that <somewhere> be? For which other countrys trade would the Irish Government be publishing data?

UK had a healthy trade surplus with Ireland....

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/...-irish-republic-a-trade-surplus-b1871900.html

the chart I am looking at shows "Great Britain" and it shows "Northern Ireland."

it does not mention RoI, or Ireland, in the heading or in the line definitions.

Do you mean the chart has an implied, or invisible, heading "Trade between the Republic of Ireland and" ?

The link says it comes from www.independent.co.uk

If you look at the link, it explains that it is trade between Ireland and NI/GB.

Why shouldn't the EU police its own border.
The Protocol was a way of avoiding a reintroduction of a hard border between Ireland and NI.
It was an Agreement between UK and EU to avoid the hard border.
But UK is not abiding by the agreement. Therefore the default position will have to be EU policing its own border, and the subsequent reintroduction of the hard border on the island of Ireland.
It will be the failure of UK to honour its agreement that will cause that hard border.

That might well hasten the re-unification of Ireland.

How come strangers on a DIY internet forum often have the knowledge to solve complicated international matters yet politicians don’t?

The Protocol was supposed to solve the problem, but one side of the agreement has ignored their liabilities under that Protocol.
We're not solving an issue, we're trying to second guess who/why/what/when etc.

The Protocol was supposed to solve the problem
If it is shown that the Protocol is the problem, then why should it be implemented.
Boris and co have admitted they didn't anticipate the problems that have arisen with the protocol and maybe the EU didnt either.

But that is palpable nonsense because T May foresaw the problems.
The civil service don't throw all the reports and paperwork away when a new PM takes over.
If Boris claims he didn't foresee the problems, he's telling lies. But Boris doesn't tell lies.
In addition, very little attempt has been made to implement the Protocol.

They did. Loads of people did, including within the government.

If we're not implementing it does that mean we're rejoining the EU?
