Just found one of the plastic IDC tools at B&Q for 98p
Comes with wiring/connection instructions but says not suitable for 'NTE5 line box' (whatever that means).
is an NTE5 line box (actually its just the face plate)
you can't use the insertion tool to which you refer as it is the wrong size for the "modem" connection but it is ok for the phone side (i think)
it was supplied (and installed) by bt for any one who wanted broad band and it replaced the master socket, but all this changed in 2001 when the now common "adsl plug and go filter" became available
