Cool, I thought I needed some special "oak wood" screws. I will definitely pilot them - to prevent splitting as well!
BTW, following your advice, I am actually more inline with 27mm right now: cheaper, lighter and will indeed look better in my tiny office.
My plan was to grind the bottom end of each leg, until even and stable, if needed
