Just wondered whether anyone has heard of this or not.

A friend of mine has a software company and have recently moved into new premises and were experiencing nuisance RCD tripping, they run about 30 PC's mostly rendering computer graphics so had to get it sorted.

A chap from the leccy board tested the circuits and told them that it was a problem with PC's as they leak a lot of current to earth causing the RCD to trip.

Is this true?

yes

Yes.

See more here.

Did they tell the people from whom they bought/rented the premises what they would be doing in there?

A real sparky can confirm, but my guess at a solution would be to distribute the computers on a number of circuits (at least 6??) protected by RCBOs.
