Hi,

We moved to an oil-heated house during the summer. We had our first oil delivery 3 1/2 weeks ago of 500litres (have a 1200litre tank).

Our heating stopped last night, and on investigating discovered the tank to be empty.

Our house is 5 years old, boiler serviced in September, underfloor heating, 3 bedrooms, living room, kitchen and dining room. We currently have the heating on for 2 hours in the morning and 4 hours in the evening. The temperature in the house during the day doesn't drop below 18degrees.

Is it likely that we have used this amount in this short period of time? Or should we suspect a leak or theft?

Any ideas would be great.

Cheers

In my small cottage (2 beds, 19kw boiler) I use 2200 litres a year. At the moment the demand is high, in the summer its hot water only.
I'd hope 500 litres would last longer than that, but if your burner is running constantly for 6 hours a day you could work it out, I suppose.
A typical nozzle passes between 0.6 and 0.8 galls per hour.
Oil price is now 70p per litre and rising...if you can get a delivery.
John :)

Impossible to say without knowing the size of the boiler and whether the house is semi, detached etc and whether it is well insulated

Our house is well insulated - the floors are warm all day and there are no drafts etc

We paid around £250 for the inital delivery. We can't get a refill until the new year, although husband went tonight and got 50litres in 2 containers, which will hopefully last a few days.

Sorry, don't know what size boiler. The house is semidetached.

Could well be theft, even in these temperatures you shouldn't have used that much in that amount of time. Theft would be the better option, a leak of this magnitude will cost thousands in clean-up fees, would be worth getting the tank & pipework checked though.

Unlikely to have used 500 litres with your timings and with a well insulated 2 bed semi.

Where is the tank located in relation to the road? is there a level gauge on it?
