Anyone see the prog tonight about the lunar landing conspiracy? I'll seed it and let Adam take off, off you go (I'm going to bed soon).

Well, the conspiracy theory is that the Titanic's sister ship, the Oceanic, is the ship that actually sank on that fateful maiden voyage. The Oceanic had been involved in a collision (I think on its way to fit-out), suffered heavy damage and the insurance policy wouldn't pay up in those circumstances. So the idea is they swapped the names, the Oceanic, sailing under the name of "Titanic" was scuppered in the North Atlantic. They claim the insurance money on that and are left with a good ship that would pass inspection (Oceanic was so knackered it apparently shouldn't have done).
All the things in favour were:
1) Another Canard-owned ship sailed out to a point near the collision BEFORE the collision, carrying nothing but 3000 woolly jumpers and blankets, then just stayed there, in mid ocean. During a coal strike.
2) The Oceanic was given a load of modifications to make it virtually identical from the exterior to the Titanic.
3) The two ships were moored next to a large dry dock, and swapped back and forth for a period of days/weeks just before, an ideal opportunity to shuffle them about
Loads of other things too, like despite being at a time when work was hard to find, all but one of the sailors who sailed it down from Belfast didn't sign back on for the maiden voyage.
But, they proved pretty conclusively it is a false accusation, the Titanic and Oceanic had very differently shaped bridges amongst other things.

Ever since I proposed a better method to estimate the number of nails in a kg...
You are right, Cunard and White Star merged in the 1930s. The ship with the jumpers and blankets was owned by a key player in White Star, but was from a different company presumably a cargo one.
And when I said Oceanic I meant Olympic. I have been thinking about Australia you see, so Oceania
I made an error, it was deliberate. And I would have gotten away with it too, if hadn't been for you meddling... IT consultants.
