OLD Boiler

Hello Harry, thank you for your reply. I have looked for actuator micro-switches on the boiler, can't see anything like that. But a significant development, after reassembling the 3-port valve assembly, I set the lever on the vale to manual (slid it over and locked it into the notch). After doing this the system is working like never before, pump running, radiators getting hot. I was hoping with your experience you could explain why doing this, I now have a working system. From what I have read, the system is not designed to run like this, the lever in this position is only for draining or filling the system. The only explanation I can think of, is since the lever is attached to the cam operating the micro switches, it is achieving greater travel than the valve motor and working the switches. But this does not make sense, the motor has to drive the cam to it's full travel, this is what stops the motor and puts it into the reverse mode. I have operated the HW/CH switch on the boiler and the 3-port valve moves into the corresponding position for what has been selected.

Again thanks for your help
Dave

I don't think anyone suggested to look for, or suggested that there are any micro-switches on the boiler. I think you have though proven that the actuator is faulty, not managing proper movement without your help and needs to be replaced.

Having a spare, known good and functional actuator to hand - is a useful diagnostic aid anyway.

Hello Harry, I would agree it points to the 3-port valve, replacing this will have to be the next step. Even if this is not the problem, it would eliminate it as the problem. Unfortunately as my luck would have it, my valve is drain the system replacement, this been the case I will have to put it off for now. I'm quite happy to run the system on manual for now, I assume this will not damage the system?

Sharing your knowledge has been a great help to me, thank you for all your help and patience.
