Regulation 314-01-01 in BS7671:2001 (Amd 1 and 2) states
"Every installation shall be divided into circuits as necessary to:
(i) avoid danger and minimize inconvenience in the event of a fault, and
(ii) facilitate safe operation, inspection, testing and maintenance."
A single main RCD would not satisfy this.
Certain items of fixed current using equipment when installed in Zone 1 of a bathroom needed RCD protection, basically if it wasn't a water heater, a shower pump or SELV current using equipment then it needed to be on a 30mA RCD. Standard rules such as the items must be suitable for the zone also stand. (reg 609-09-02).
Also non fixed current using equipment installed in zone 3 should be on a 30mA RCD (609-09-03)
