...Mr. Allen Swift received this 1928 Rolls-Royce Piccadilly P1 Roadster from his father, brand new - as a graduation gift in 1928.

He drove it up until his death last year [actually, 2005]…..at the age of 102 !!!
----
He donated it to a Springfield, Massachusetts museum after his death [arrangements made while he was alive].

It has 170,000 miles on it, still runs like a Swiss watch, dead silent at any speed and is in perfect cosmetic condition...

Very evocative and nostalgic.
Just one of the once many British world renown names.Rolls Royce is now owned by the all conquering Germans (BMW)
Where did our manufacturing industry go wrong?

170K is nothing. It's just about run in compared to the cars in the Volvo High Mileage Club, where the entry point is 150K.

There are three cars over 750K, including a man in Wales with a 1988 244DL who has done nearly 800K. The top prize goes to a man in USA who has a 1966 P1800S, which has done nearly 3 million miles since he bought it new.

That's not a car. Its a work of art!

Not very patriotic of his father though. Thought he would have given him a Stutz or a Cord

Rolls-Royce is a British company that makes aero-engines.

They have sold BMW a licence to use the brand name on the motor cars they assemble near Chichester.

Built too many Spitfires and Hurricanes

I did actually know that. Its just that I have a bee in my bonnet over famous British names/marques not now being British owned/licenced. Like Jaguar and Land Rover being owned by Tata of India. They, like Rolls Royce cars, are still currently manufactured in the UK. But for how long.
I guess my,I suppose you could call it an obsession, is manifested by my own experience. I worked for 37 years for a world renown British name- Coles Cranes-who succumbed to the Germans (Krupp Cranes) in 1999
Britain now imports its total requirement for mobile and truck mounted cranes.
I apologize for deviation from topic
