One Wire Too Many (in PIR lamp) (Ed.)

Yes, that's what he said.

Sorry mate, are you saying that his PIR light doesn't require an earth but will need L, SL an N? Again, @DaveH1954 seems to be competent enough to have determined which cables are required for the light fitting (eg. earth, neutral and live) and which are not. Perhaps he can link to the light fitting. Personally, andI have only fitted about 20 exterior lights, I haven't come across one that needs L, SL and N but no earth.

I don't know. That's why I asked what the instructions said.

Were any of your lamps plastic? Mine are.

To date, every flood light with a PIR,or not, that I have fitted has had a metal body and required an earth.

Hi guys, apologies for delay. The new light is asking for three wires - live, neutral and earth. I connected the light up earlier today using three wires as suggested earlier by “opps” and isolated the SL at both the light and the switch. The light only comes on through the PIR as expected. If I isolate the permanent live (at both ends) and connect using the SL will it mean the light can be turned on from the switch and that the PIR function remains active? Apologies for being such a pillock

Well it means the PIR function can be turned on or off.
If the lamp has the feature of override on by flicking the switch off and on quickly then the light can be turned on when wanted.

You only have to alter one end of the wire being used.
The wires are only Permanent live or Switched live because of where they are connected.

and that the PIR function remains active?
Only when switch is on.

IMO SL is the best choice.

It would be useful to read the instructions.

Don't cut the spare wire off, it may be useful in future.
