God (Not that I believe) with one simple question. Why?

To find out more about people that have influenced you.

I would say Adam Smith - father of modern economics and then a close second Sir Isaac Newton.

Town and city councils put up statues to honour the philanthropy of the person, not to celebrate slavery.

Gladstone was a member of the Liberal party, and would probably be a subscriber to the Guardian if he were alive today.

He opposed the abolition of slavery because his family owned slaves in the W.Indies, when slavery was abolished he claimed compensation for loss of property.
He received the equivalent of £9 million in today's money.

The Liberals are the real hypocrites.
Liverpool University has a hall of residence named after Gladstone - that is now going to be renamed.
Liverpool also has the famous Penny Lane of Beatles fame, named after the slaver James Penny; how long before that gets renamed?

Totally barmy (or should I say BAME) but anyway, who decides on the renaming of a street? Do its residents get a say?

Yawn. Getting really bored of people trying to cloud the real issue like this.

I am pretty sure the Guardian today disagrees with its beliefs during the American civil war.

The difference is, the Guardian no longer stands to represent the glory of the slave trade. But a slave trader, literally stood on a pedestal for all to see, did just that.

Ever stopped to think that should the people whom the statues are of were still alive may have the same thoughts and apologize for their actions?

The past is the past and should be left as is. Learn from it think towards the future, you can't change what's behind you only what's in front

Apologies for "racism" are never accepted, and the "racism" will be the only thing you are known for, and it will be brought up against you repeatedly for ever!

Take the case of Eric Clapton; backstage at a concert in the 70s a black man groped Eric's girlfriend immediately before a concert. Eric was incensed and proceeded to have a "racist" rant onstage. He later apologised, but this rant is forever held against Clapton and for some people it is all that he is known for. Despite being one of the greatest champions of black music and known for ensuring that royalties were paid correctly to aging blues musicians at a time when other rock stars were ripping off blues old songs and taking the songwriting credits.

Enoch Powell was one of the greatest politicians we have ever had, achieved many things but he is only remembered by many for a "racist" phrase that he didn't actually say!

thats true, nothing can get George Floyd back, but this movement can at least hope to change a system that means almost twice the rate of black people as white people get killed in America by police.

Why should we involve ourselves in protests for a racist problem in the the US, don't see protests outside embassies of countries doing nothing to stop slavery/racism today, some even encourage it. Last week at work everyone was talking about their disgust at the murder of Floyd George, this week all negative talk about the riots, statues etc, normal people will only put up with so much.

If you don't want to, nobody will try to make you. Are you under the mistaken impression that somebody will?

In fact, if you don't care about racism in your own country, nobody will make you protest about that, either.

Why make stuff up mate?

Yes, why did you?

"Why should we?" you asked.

If you don't feel like it, don't.

No issue.

I don't recall that he said that...... You can't just go round making up lies (unless your the press then apparently that's fine)
