1932 Semi Detched house with a very small fire place opening in the downstairs room. When we moved there was a gas fire which has since been capped off and removed as we want a log burner next year.

Was told by a friend to knock off the plaster to the size of the opening so you can see what is behind. Which is what I have duly due this morning in bid to finish and decorate before Xmas.

In doing so I've found what looks like a pair of lintels which are not overlapping onto the bring and supported by 2 procarious L shape brackets beneath?? Can someone confirm?

What I've opened so far doesn't incoroporate the lintel I'm putting which is allowing for overlap both sides and will go above what is in the photo.

Do I knock out now or do I put the lintel in first then remove the bricks to open the fireplace?

Any help or advice is welcome. Southampton based, beer money if someone can lend a hand.
