Outside Lights

He also said that the cables currently in the cavity can be taken out and chased into the internal walls. I said is this permitted as they will be outside the dead zones coming down the walls. His reply was yes as long as protected by an RCD. I said we are using RCBO. He said that is even better. I said so it is ok running down the walls?. He said yes and that no trunking/conduit was required because using RCD or RCBO. If a MCB then protection would be required. Just checking that he right there too because I thought it needed protection in any event. Cheers guys.

Yes, he's wrong. They would required protection.
It's strange - the BC officer I had was very knowledgable about electrics as well as the usual things.

I am actually amazed that on 2 things he has given me incorrect advice. WoW! Just goes to show.

Do you have this in writing?
If so, investigate the council’s complaints procedure.
Does he claim to have any qualificiations?

(BTW, none of this surprises me.)

Drifting off original topic a bit. Please let me know if I should open it an on new thread. Don't wanna hack anyone off. I am running cable outside (underground) to power 1) Electric gate and lights and 2) Garage. I was thinking go the hog and use 10mm SWA T&E for both. Both to mini consumer units then run whatever off the mini units. Is that right? I am not fitting these by the way only running the cables but need to know which cable I should be using. I thought 10mm would be good (most probably OTT but I am ok with that) but just wanted thoughts on whether 10mm T&E SWA is the right choice. Cheers fellas.

That would be called SWA 3-core.
You need to talk to the qualified gate fitters to ask what they would require, as this is a specialised area.
I'll re-iterate this [powered gates] is a very specialised area with some very specific safety requirements and as DS says check with your installer and also check their credentials.
One of the remote sites I use had powered gates fitted a couple of years ago and a police chase in the dark resulted in the second police car driving head on into the invisible closing gate. Action against the owners and unqualified installers was very swift.
There was a case where a small child was hurt by an unprotected gate since then and again action was swift.
