Oven Cleaning

B

Bodd

I need to have an oven clean.. by a oven clean company

The thing is; the last two ovens I had cleaned packed up within a year.

Coincidence or not.

what does that mean?

fan motor bearings?

heating element?

timer?

door fell off?

how old were they and how long had they been neglected?

Most probably neglected and lack of cleaning. One was a cheapo. Would not know if yet were repairable I just replaced them.

Nothing lasts forever, and ovens do have a stressful existence.

I was told that keep opening the door to check how the cooking is going will shorten the lifespa , as the element is going through now heating and cooling cycles, more abruptly, than it would do otherwise.

Probably not. They spray caustic soda everywhere and it eats elements, wiring etc...Also...elements are hygroscopic and easily cause earth leakage faults after they have used water to flush the caustic away

That advice is rubbish..An element will cycle tens of thousands of times in a lifetime.Opening a door and cycling it a few more times will make no difference...An element is not like a pressurised aircraft that stresses each cycle.

Why do elements fail then?
Does going from 18 deg. C to 240 deg. C and down again not stress the element?
Whatever stress happens is designed for..Like all things manufactured they try and make them cheaper and cheaper and hence more failure. The usual cause of failure is water ingress at the ends as the powder is hygroscopic,or physical damage.Yes they probably do die after hundreds of thousands of cycles but opening the door 10 times every day for a year is still only 3650 extra cycles at most..The heat loss and thermostat are not that extreme or sensitive on door opening, the temperature fluctuates sinusoidally anyway and door opening changes it little.

I’m doing mine next week. An oven cleaning pack from the supermarket and a couple of boxes of Brillo pads. Hard work, will take half a day.

Top tip I found the hard way...Caustic soda v quickly knackers Wooden Worktops resulting in a day of re sanding and oiling!

I think this may be the problem at our daughters. She moved in, SWMBO gave the oven a clean, and when daughter went to use it, RCD popped. Not knowing anything about electric ovens, do you think it will dry out and work again, or if not, are elements cheap enough to make changing it worthwhile, and are they generic or model specific ?

Elements are cheap and differing shapes and fixing points. In fan ovens they are assembled around the fan and need to be replaced as an assembly. They generally do not work again after damp gets in them..Like all manufactured things..Some are easily serviced and repaired, others are not worth it...Generally ovens are not worth mending after about 10 years but as said that is generally.

Clean your own oven? That's what I do. Regular cleaning before all the grease etc builds up making it hard to remove is the trick.. and a layer of foil on the bottom to catch any drips.
