Oven Cleaning

I might buy Mrs Bod; a how to clean your own oven book and kit, for an early christmas present.

I think this may be the problem at our daughters. She moved in, SWMBO gave the oven a clean, and when daughter went to use it, RCD popped. Not knowing anything about electric ovens, do you think it will dry out and work again, or if not, are elements cheap enough to make changing it worthwhile, and are they generic or model specific ?

it might dry out. If there is, say, an additional grill element or something, that may warm the oven enough or if you can blow a hair drier or hot air gun at it.

The element itself should not need cleaning because it glows red hot and burns off any dirt.

If yours has got damp inside, it is probably cracked or loose at the end seals, so may fail again next time it gets damp. Using them regularly tends to keep them dry. They sometimes absorb damp if they have been stored in a shed or something.

Some are very easy to change, some aren't. The element is not an expensive part.

because it is a service part it should not be hard to change. You will find how-to-do-it vids online. Most brands are owned by Bosch or Electrolux and have common designs. Search using your make and model.

Example:

If the fan is dirty, clean that too. Accumulated grime can throw it out of balance and make it noisy.

Probably not. They spray caustic soda everywhere and it eats elements, wiring etc...Also...elements are hygroscopic and easily cause earth leakage faults after they have used water to flush the caustic away

Elements are hygroscopic, basically just like pyro/ MI cable, but with a steel jacket instead of copper, an element and heat resistant sealed at each end, but unless they are already leaking and faulty - they should not absorb water. The usual failure mode, is a point of high resistance in the element, over heating and burning a hole through the jacket. Usually first 'spotted' by the RCD tripping, or the element failing completely.

I may have said this before, an elderly relative of my nieces husband has two sets of oven shelving, one for cooking and one for show

Im not interested in repairing the oven I just want it cleaned. If it packs up Ill buy another.

My wife has one of those steam cleaning tools, you the one you can fit a nozzle on and use it to clean grout between tiles etc.
Two months ago I used it to clean our oven and it was brilliant. Play the steamer on a section of the oven, such as the top right corner, and gentle move it around that area until any grease/fat begins to run down. Simply wipe it off with one of those double sided sponges using the nylon abrasive side and then rinse down with a damp cloth. It came up like new. Took about 2 hours but avoided harsh chemicals and nasty smells.
