Hi,

The controls on this old (pre 2006 [maybe 90's]) have broken.

I assume the appliance is the 'visor' type showing in the image from a buying guide below?

If so is there a conclusive way to kniw if it is ducted or recirculating?
It has the cover above it which I would assume is to hide the duct connection, but also has a vent/intake on the top.

Thanks for your help.

If it is ducted to the outside you will have a vent either in an outside wall with a grill or cowl or through a pipe with a terminal through the roof. It does however look like the recirculating type.If you can remove the box between the hood and the ceiling you would be able to tell that way also.
 
The fact that we can see the fan blades almost guarantees that it is a recirculating fan - external venting extractors would shroud the fans; directing airflow towards the vent pipe.
But as above, taking the boxing off will confirm.
