My oven fan comes on as it should be grinds to a halt after about 20 minutes. It's gas so it carries on cooking but with no fan. The fan just makes a humming sound after this. Not sure what the problem is as the fan works fine (for 20 mins). Is it some sort of broken overheat protection? What would I need to replace? Please Help?

Make ? Model ?

Although as its gas you are not allowed to do anything legally unless you're either gas safe registered or legally competant.

It's 10 years old - worked fine until the fan problem (a little to old do you think?) It's easy to access as pulls out with plenty of give in the gas pipe so no need to disconnect, just not sure what 'bit' has given way.

Its not the fact of whether you need to disconnect the gas, its because the fan is an integral part of a gas appliance that you aren't allowed to work on it, I can only reccomend that you call out an engineer to repair the fault.

That is misleading, their is no law to stop you working on your own gas appliances, especially if you were replacing a non gas component, I know this doesn't really help the op. but if he decided to replace the fan there is nothing to stop him as long as he does it safely. He may however be responsible for the consequences of causing any gas leaks during the process, but that is different to saying he cannot do anything on a gas appliance.

It is not misleading in any way, the HSE made it clear a couple of years ago than certain parts on a gas appliance were not allowed to be swapped by anything but a competent engineer, fans were one of the components listed, and there is nothing in law that says people can work "on their own appliances", that is an "old wives tale", minimum requirement in law now is competency and the guideline for that is having passed gas exams.

BTW fans are listed because in many appliances, gas ovens included, they also supply combustion air to the burners, in the case of GDHA gas built in ovens fitting them the wrong way round causes unstable flames.

Do you mean that there is now a law which prohibits a householder from repairing his own cooker?

Please tell us what this law is.

Bear in mind that laws come from Acts of Parliament.

can you be prosecuted, from illegal gas work ?
Can you be sent to prison for illegal gas work ?

Yes to both, so I'd pretty much say that's law and not a civil matter.

"The Gas Safety Installation & Use Regulations 1998, (Gas Regs 1998) is the relevant law for the UK"

Laid before Parliament 9th October 1998
Came into force 31st October 1998

Enforced by the HSE

Does this answer your question ?

Is it your opinion that the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 applies to a householder mending his cooker?

Is it your opinion that a householder, mending his own cooker in his own home, can be described as "an employer or self-employed person... at any place of work under his control?"

Is it your opinion that a householder, mending his own cooker in his own home, can be described as "a landlord?"

If "no," then it does not answer my question, about a householder mending his own cooker in his own home.

The health and safety at work act covers exactly that.... At work.

The gas safety regulations are all encompassing, so cover both work and householders etc, so the point you are trying to make is irrelevant, do yourself a favour and read up, it's all there on the net for you from official sources, Gov.uk etc. it'll save you making a fool of yourself arguing.

The gas regulations are a Statutory Instrument expanding the H&S@W act.

The regulations are not themselves an Act.

If you can find, in the regulations, a regulation applying to a person who is not an employee, or an employer, or a landlord, let's see it.

you probably don't believe me, so start here:
