Paint disposal

felix, top advice, you are a visionary and a hero.

Thanks keyplayer. It's nice to know that one's efforts aren't just blowing in the wind.

One day all will be like you......

Another nice thought but maybe we need a bit more diversity. The idea of a planet devoid of managers, salesmen and politicians sounds great in theory but I'm not convinced it would work. On the other hand I don't think it's ever been tried ---

Garden Waste.
The bin men enter property to remove dustbin contents.
...All potentially dangerous household waste, such as old chemicals, car batteries and gas cylinders should be taken directly to the Recycling Centre and given to the attendant to dispose of in the hazardous waste cage...Old medicines can be taken to your local pharmacy for identification and safe disposal...

Zero waste programs are now unfolding in many countries, and are being pioneered in America, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. Zero waste is a 'whole system approach' to the flow of resources through society, based on the vision that waste can be eliminated by the efficient use of resources. Further information can be found at www.zerowaste.co.nz

The concept of zero waste transforms waste management away from 'managing' to 'minimising' waste, as waste becomes fundamentally unacceptable. Being a relatively new concept, the breadth and depth of thinking and practice is undergoing significant development.

'Zero waste' is a similar concept to 'zero accidents' or 'zero defects' in manufacturing. An extreme target encourages new levels of innovation and efficiency. The term 'zero' should not be viewed as an absolute figure, but is seen as a target to strive for.

And don't we flipping well pay for it too !! Another coupla CT bands and twill be the same as a hefty mortgage !! looking at £2k

ARE YOU FOR REAL? they actually come into your house? or do you mean that they come onto your drive and take the bin to the roadside?

i live in doncaster, here is our waste collection routine:

Every weds night, we put 3 containers on our pavement. black wheelie bin for normal rubbish. green wheelie bin for grass clippings and anything compostable (cardboard). Green plastic box for glass, metal, paper and old clothes (they collect this at 7:30am sometimes, so we put it out at night!). By the time we return from work on thurs, all 3 are empty. green bin only gets emptied every other thurs, but we loose track of that and put it out every week anyway!

Awfully sorry old bean ... My meaning was :-
prop·er·ties
As in Something owned; a possession.
A piece of real estate:
eg. Has a dustbin on the property.
Something tangible or intangible to which its owner has legal title: properties such as copyrights and trademarks.
Possessions considered as a group

;)

We have glass, cans, newspaper, garden waste, everything else. We are only allowed to put garden waste in the garden waste bin, no food scraps or other compostables.

If you a particular friend of mine then the "everything else" category includes about half a tonne of clay he dug out of his back garden and has been putting in his household waste, a few shovelfuls each week

Dunno why they dont re introduce a deposit on bottles....possibly cans too..

As a kid we used to get 3p on a bottle and it didnt take long to save up for another....stick it on the price of the drink...kids take em back to the shops....they get another drink....the bottle gets recycled..

Everyones happy

On a higher level....make it a quid on a bottle of wine....50p on a bottle of beer or cider.

Then it wont just be the eco friendly mob taking bottle back....the winos can join in too!

Seriously though....a deposit would be a solution once the mechanic of it were worked out.

We crept around back of pub when the crates were out for collection, snaffled some bottles and returned 'em via the 'bottle and jug' or off licence counter for the returnable deposit.... worked twice, third time clout around earhole .. followed by same at home .. decided that action was between devil and deep blue sea... Never did it again ..
Soon after, the pub gained one of the first chain-link fenced lockups at the rear.
:D :D

Deposits are a good idea: they still use them in a lot of countries. Canada is one that springs to mind. It's especially good with things like Coke and Orangina bottles: they are unique so instead of being ground down, melted and made into new bottles, they are washed and refilled. Much less wasteful.
