The big problem with a solid bed and thin slabs is that when you think you've tapped them down flat, you haven't, or there's a void, or you step on one, and then once that base has set hard and the flexibility gone the slab rocks and it can't then be adjusted. Filling joints won't help as that's for block pavers not slabs. And with no joint gap getting them up is a pain and liable to damage all around the rocking slabs.
