Paying upfront for garden fence job

Just sat here with a brew reading this and it's so annoying. See the same thing on cowboy builders/ Rogue Traders etc. The difficulty people have getting money back is a joke. Say Ted walks into a shop and chooses a dining table and chairs. Tells the sales assisant that he's putting the table in the car and coming back with his wallet to pay and collect the chairs and doesn't. Guess what Ted gets nicked for theft. It may seem different but it the same thing. People like this rogue spoil it for customer and honest working solo traders out there. Big companys do it too. Ted dont let this guy put you off. Plenty of good guys out there. Ordered to bulk bags of gravel this week over the phone on my mobile. Guy asks if i want to pay now or just the driver when he gets there. Plasterer currently doing some work for me ( 900 quid ) Quoted we arranged date to start. He's been and done first room and it was me who had to ask him about paying for the job lol. Hope you get it rosolved

The guy is obviously thick, brazen, but also living in some Walter Mitty parallel universe. He’d still posting jobs carried out on his business Facebook page, so it’s difficult to resist the temptation to politely tell people he’s walked off with £450 of our money. After all, he’s a “sole trader” so it’s ok.

Footnote-have been liaising with Court people to see if he has other CCJs. They’ve sent me a link to the various County Courts to get the info. Can I just ring snd say I have CCJ etc. Will they readily provide that info.

(My next problem is going to be enforcement, when he fails to cough up)

Hi Facebook..This is somewhere that you can record all the jobs he's done to prove he's got an income to pay you back. I can see your temptation and frustration to put something on his page but be careful. The jobs he posts that have been done may have the persons name. Contact them thru Facebook saying that you thinking of getting him to do a job. Ask how much did he charge for yours etc.

Ok. Only joking about Facebook. I confronted him about this before it got to court process. He was adapt they were old photos that he’d just put up. Not sure if there’s a way of checking this? (Don’t really do Facebook)

Let the court do the work. You want full payment not installments. If he has multiple CCJ's the likelyhood is you have lost the 450. Don't let it play on your mind all the time Ted. Hard i know but you going to have to put it down to an expensive lesson in dealing with trader's. If you get the money back it's a bonus.

I'm not sure what you are asking, but.... Google can do a photo search, to match a photo you upload, to any other photos posted on the internet.

It's a good way to help identify photos people have lifted from sites, which are not their own photos.

Sorry to be obscure. It was just that the guy was implying that recent photos uploaded to his business Facebook page were old ones. Hope that makes sense.

Can I go back to the issue if previous (multiple?) CCJs. I’ve been given details of local county court where these details would be held. Looking at the website, I need to write to acquire that info. Is that people’s understanding? Am I in a better position having just received a judgement against the individual?

Hi Again. I'd ask the guy outright if he going to do the job or give refund. If you get a no from him for the job and refund you are quite within your right then to leave a negative feedback on both Facebook and NextDoor Digest. Don't say "if you don't pay or do the job i going to leave negative feed back". I would contact both Facebook and Nextdoor regarding what he has done. It maybe the case he has done the same and others have reported him. You can leave a review now. Saying paid deposit on such a date and waiting for guy to come do the job. Will update my review on his work when job finished.

The job has been done by someone else. (Cancelled three times) Before the litigation started, he promised to cough up, was just a hiccup, getting money soon etc? When I emailed him the LBA (letter before action), he just said “sole trader, not a business”. He has no intention of paying.

Not happy this imbecile thinks he can just walk off with £450 of our money. (Cost now circa £500 with court fee and interest) Judgement just applied for. Expect enforcement to be necessary, so high court writ probably next step. Unfortunately, don’t think costs will be high enough for bailiff service. Would like nothing better than watching two burly bailiffs removing all the plasma TVs.
