Hi there guys. having a fully working burglar alarm. I would like to add more protection to my house.
There have been a lot burglaries in my area including some close friends in the early hours at random but in a quick sequence, the usual laptop cars stolen ect. on looking at a friends house who had has laptop stolen. there was a small circle on his kitchen window that had been cut out this was how they gained access. had a look at another neighbor same method on his dining window. the appear to use the sucking method. my guess is they score the window they use a sucker.

as you know most people do not set there alarms at night (the scum obviously know that) and are use this to their advantage. I will add that some of the houses on the estate that were burgled had security systems obviously they were not on. there alarms are just standard just have pirs and door contacts they were obviously useless as the alarm was not on. (no window protection)

so to cut a long story short, is there any kind of wired device that will pick up a frequency to detect this method. I would imagine the knife or whatever they use to score the window would make some sort of a noise a very quiet noise but it wouldn't be silent. is there such a device for this? thanks.

sorry if the post isi not very clear its late and my mind is falling asleep.

One break beam detector can cover all the windows in a straight wall. Anyone walking up to the wall will break the beam and thus trigger the alarm. Even then the criminals may still smash and grab knowing it will be several seconds before anyone can respond to the alarm. Better is to set the beam across the route to windows as far from the windows as possible and arrange for it to turn on a light in the house. That is something the criminals will not expect and may deter them from attempting a break in at that house.

fair point, lots of keys being stolen for vehicles and its a few seconds, main problem is people tend to leave keys in field of view/ obvious places. Often tell my potential new customers what I see as I approach the house. Amazes me how many people leave open doors and windows unattended or protected.

If the circle is being cut, and not smashed, an acoustic break glass detector won't be triggered. It needs a THUMP followed by CRASH, TINKLE, TINKLE. It's not what you want to hear but it will save you from making a mistake! ;)

HI Bernard, your comment came up when I searched 'perimeter' in this forum. Am looking into perimeter alarms/break beams to protect an open driveway out front (approx 5-6m wide opening) and possibly something half way down the back garden, full width. Any suggestions, easy fit if possible please? I like the idea of turning on a light/lights too, rather than an alarm. Any help or advice greatly received

Can you elaborate and provide some links?

Cheers

Single beams outside? Fine if you don't mind false activations.

Expensive but probably available from other sources

I have a single beam across my entrance which does not appear to suffer from false activations. Admitedly it does not connect to the alarm system but instead operates lights after dusk and when necessary as a "door chime" when people are heading toward the shop and the shop is un-attended.

I was searching something along those lines and found this

I'd be interested in opinions on this idea

The decision as to whether to use wireless to connect alarm system components requires carefull consideration. Wireless signals can be blocked or jammed thus disabling the alarm sensor(s).

blocking = accidental interference from transmitters of other legal users of the same radio channel.

jamming = intentional interference, often performed with criminal intent to disable the alarm system

Wireless is often used as a marketing tool. "No need to install cables, can be installed by a DIYer in a few minutes" is a powerful "advantage" for the salesman to use to make a sale.

Nobody buys security from RS ..... Twice the normal price ....takex beams around £70 plus vat , optex slightly cheaper ...

...... & less chance of false activations than that rubbish.

..... sorry, us alarm engineers don't know what we are talking about, I'm gone/

Thanks Sparymarka, and what/how would the taken beams be connected? Hard wired and to what? light switch or alarm/sounder unit?

Is it possible to get a single beam sender & receiver with a mirror to reflect the beam?

If so, I could hard wire it, but what sort of range would it go up to?
