Pets.....

good idea keeping them chained up, they distroy too much wildlife, real problems in Australia with cats introduced by white settlers BUT we used to have cats and never had rats.

Our cat has brought much to our garden during its long life - it fertilises the soil, insulates the shed (fur everywhere), brings wildlife into the garden (dead birds/mice), and provides amusement for our dog (though after the 3rd clawing, the dog learnt its place in the chain of command).

Dont they have silly laws in America about cats? I visited a house in Florida once, and they had a pet cat, but they had to keep it chained up outside the house . . . You're allowed to let them roam freely here - thats how they socialise. Seems a bit cruel to keep them chained up. Not worth having a cat if thats what you have to do.

Well, I haven't been to Florida in years, but everywhere else I've been, cats are the one thing that are left alone. Owning a dog is high maintenance and expensive and they can get you in a lot of trouble if they roam around (or get themselves in trouble) Cats are ideal. (Im a cat person,as you can tell)
But, the very thing (their indifference) that sets them apart is the one thing that gives them the reputation of being difficult......much like people, wouldn't you agree? :)

If you own any animal and you are so irrisponsible that you let it roam around and annoy others or endanger anything then i personally think you should be imprisoned untill you learn how to look after things.

All the bad reports about animals as pets are mainly down to there idiot owners who cant even look after theirselves.

Some people couldnt even look after a stone if it was their pet cause they are so dumb, and i must add i would put most cat owners in that catagory because of the trouble their free ranging animals cause others and the local wildlife.

it's becoming obvious to me, that cats (are we talking about the domesticated house cats???) are not the same there. We have feral cats that can be a nuisance for people, but rarely wild life (unless we're talking about mice, birds, squirrels, rodents, in general)

if i had a pet, i would want this one

The cat was rescued from somewhere, dont recall where, i was too young. Wildlife - or rather, wild-dead  dead mice and birds. I dont think you got the joke-like attitude of my post!

It can be a vicious little b****r sometimes - scratched me a fair few times - but when he settles down, hes lovely, will sit on your lap while you watch TV.

The dog arrived about 10 years ago (the cat came first) and it used to chase the cat around, cornered it once, so the cat clawed at the dog's face (it was a puppy then) and the dog ran off and sat in its bed! Hasn't done it since, but still runs at cats when it sees them at the end of the garden!

Freddie, many cat owners dont let their cats roam around, and they keep them in the house, but for many cats it is natural to go outside, even if its just to take a dump. Our cat would never use a litter tray. I have been woken many times by cats growling at each other outside, the noises they make is quite amusing sometimes! It is natural for cats to explore and "meet" (fight with) other cats. Why make it spend its life inside? Its just cruel that IMO.

I think freddie's having a bad day. We dont have ferral cats - not many anyway. All the cats that roam in our area can be traced to an owner - they always go back to their owner's house for food, and warmth. There aren't as many cats now in my area as there used to be though.

well, since I seem to skate on thin ice anyway.....I have 3 (cats)Lucy, Boo and Max and they've been "fixed" and they could go out if they wanted to, but they choose not to. They were all strays...so I venture to say, they saw their share of hard life and prefer the comforts of being inside. Sometimes, I try to coax them out, but they'll have none of it. They do have it made (generally speaking)

You may be good cat owners but most arent, they kick the thing out at night and think looking after a cat is just putting some milk and a tin of whiskers out.

I knew I wasn't the only one (they're my kids remark). Right now, sitting here...(.well spoke too soon...there goes lucy) they love being right up close, but not really "lap" cats. Spoiled rotten. You might try gettin her (Purdy) to exercise more, mine love to run and play but it sounds like your doing something right......21 and 26..omg-the oldest cat I ever had was 18--but she had arthritis very bad and I had to have her put down
