Hi

I am midway through having my bathroom done and the builder has found an issue. The room has a small section of old chimney in the corner and this is where the new toilet is going. He has been in the loft and says he needs to put a small bit of steel up there to support the chimney for when the bricks in the room below are removed.

Is this something that sounds like it needs planning? Nothing is changing externally and its literally removing 15cm's worth of bricks from the corner of the room.

Any thoughts?

thanks

to follow up with myself here i called planning and they said that no i dont need planning but would need to speak to building regs. Now thats all well and good but the builder is on site and has only just brought this up which does not do me much good in terms of timings so...

If i failed to tell building regs would this be the end of the world or really is it worth the pain of delayed works to do this correctly? The builder seems competent in that he talked about using steel etc but i am not sure ....

thanks

Sounds to me like the builder knows what he is doing, so that is a boon, hey!

As far as reg's are concerned, you are obligated to inform b.c. and get it inspected. Your builder should have advised as such, but it is the homeowners' responsibility.

Personally, i would not lose any sleep.
