Hi All

My daughter is having a couple of walls skimmed and replacement of damaged skirting boards.
Please resolve an ongoing argument. Which is the correct process?
1. Remove skirting, skim walls then fit new skirting
2. Skim wall to existing skirting then replace skirting (same size as original)
3. Replace skirting then skim wall.

I say 3, but the plasterer has told my daughter 1.

Cheers Doug

One - when removing skirting, you don't know what state the wall is going to be in, underneath. Far better to remove skirting, repair wall and skim down to near the floor, ensuring there is a smooth flat surface to affix new skirting of whatever height you desire.

Edit: this would have been an ideal question for a vote! :)

OP,
I was taught (NVQ) to fix skirtings first - & I always did it that way.
But there are lots of experienced plasters who do it No 1 first.

No 3 is a must when doing Remedial rendering - you dont want the render making floor or ground contact.
