BS1362 fuses can be various rating, the less common ones are black, and unusual ones may be special order.

Note the word "any" in BS1362

I haven't had any problems getting 5A but must admit I haven't bought any for several years but would assume they are still fairly easy to find. Think the last ones I bought came from DoItAll.

Place I worked at the computers in the offices would regularly go down because the girls all bought 3kw fan heaters in and plugged them into the same circuit as the computers, which got to be too much for the 32 breaker they were all on.

This happens to our reception as well, the girls plug in heaters and then the circuit trips, knocking out their computers.

I believe the Post Office (as it was then) downgraded 13 amp plugs to 8 amps for this reason.

Never heard of that for the 22 years I worked for them and we had many a 3KW heater. I should have known as my duties included PAT.

I can confirm that in GPO sites the 13 amp plugs were down rated a maximum of 2 kW loads.

Where the load was to be greater than 2 kW special dispensation had to be obtained or the equipment to be installed had to be modified so as to have it's internal loads shared between two power supply units.

Non of the radio paging equipment we installed took anything like 2 kW so the restriction did not cause us any problem. Type approval just needed to show the maximum load could not exceed the limit That included during prolonged fault conditions.

I've checked the plug and the fuse didn't appear to be loose but I've nipped up the fuse holders anyway. Will keep an eye on it and see if I get anymore problems. Thanks to everyone for all the help. Very much appreciated

Thankyou Bernard. 2kW at 240v is just over 8 amps. It is nice to be believed instead of this incessant ridicule by others I won't name but who know who they are.

Perhaps JohnD would like to provide a link to a 8a BS1362 which he claims are available instead of a 7a one which we all know are available along with 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, and 13a.

It was not a fuse policy, it was a maximun loading policy.
