polo 1.4 gearbox

My daughter's car 2005 polo, 23000 mls, 1.4, as thought the clutch as gone, put it in gear, let the clutch out, no movement, but sounds like a sack of spanners, been told there is problem with the crown wheel on these, also known as a black cap box, where a bearing collapses, can anyone confirm this, or shed anymore light on this. thanks.

Could well just be the release bearing come off.
Either way, you'll find out when the box comes out

snapped driveshaft has the same symptoms as you describe -have a look

Definetly not the thrust bearing, snapped drive shaft? i put the car in reverse, let the clutch out, got out the vehicle, handbrake on hard, knelt by the wheel, hand on wheel, and could feel the "plucking" as it tried to turn the wheel, well, it's in now with--,-- a friend of my brothers, will post back,
